Modular Church-Rosser Modulo: The Complete Picture

چکیده
In [19], Toyama proved that the union of two confluent term-rewriting systems that share absolutely no function symbols or constants is likewise confluent, a property called modularity. The proof of this beautiful modularity result, technically based on slicing terms into an homogeneous cap and a so called alien, possibly heterogeneous substitution, was later substantially simplified in [8, 12]. In this paper, we present a further simplification of the proof of Toyama’s result for confluence, which shows that the crux of the problem lies on two different properties: a cleaning lemma, whose goal is to anticipate the application of collapsing reductions and a modularity property of ordered completion that allows to pairwise match the caps and alien substitutions of two equivalent terms obtained from the cleaning lemma. The approach allows for arbitrary kinds of rules, and scales up to rewriting modulo arbitrary sets of equations.

متن کاملA Church-Rosser Checker Tool for Conditional Order-Sorted Equational Maude Specifications
The (ground) Church-Rosser property, together with termination, is essential for an equational specification to have good executability conditions, and also for having a complete agreement between the specification’s initial algebra, mathematical semantics, and its operational semantics by rewriting. Checking this property for expressive specifications that are order-sorted, conditional with po...
متن کاملDecreasing Diagrams II
This theory formalizes a commutation version of decreasing diagrams for Church-Rosser modulo. The proof follows Felgenhauer and van Oostrom (RTA 2013). The theory also provides important specializations, in particular van Oostrom’s conversion version (TCS 2008) of decreasing diagrams. We follow the development described in [1]: Conversions are mapped to Greek strings, and we prove that whenever...
متن کاملStar-free languages are Church-Rosser congruential
The class of Church-Rosser congruential languages has been introduced by McNaughton, Narendran, and Otto in 1988. A language L is Church-Rosser congruential (belongs to CRCL), if there is a finite, confluent, and length-reducing semi-Thue system S such that L is a finite union of congruence classes modulo S. To date, it is still open whether every regular language is in CRCL. In this paper, we ...
